While hiring a copywriter is a great option for many people, there are some downsides and reasons not to hire a copywriter. Here are the top three reasons you shouldn’t hire a copywriter. And I write this as a copywriter who wants to get hired!
Why You Should Do Your Own Copywriting
Good copywriting is a combination of skills and knowledge. While you may not be as skillful as someone with more experience, you have a huge advantage in the second area: knowledge.
1. You know your audience best
If you are actually working with clients or have had regular interactions with the people you want to serve, then you will know them better than a copywriter.
This should mean that you understand their needs and wants as well as the way they speak better.
That is a huge advantage over a freelance copywriter who won’t know your audience and you’ll have to educate and guide. At least at first.
2. You care more
Linked to the previous point, you should care more than a hired copywriter. You need to please your customers or clients.
It’s the same for the copywriter…except you are their client. That adds an extra level of distance between the writer and the reader of their copy.
You don’t have that burden. You can focus purely on the customer or client. The person who you have been serving already and care for.
3. You have real stories
A copywriter is coming in blind, you have real stories from working with customers and clients. These stories are invaluable for copywriting. They provide you with narratives to guide prospects and explain the value you offer.
Copywriters have to make these stories up or search for them. That can make them awkward, unreal or focused on the wrong problems and solutions.
But…
In truth, you have an advantage at the start but a good copywriter will remove this advantage.
They will spend time researching and learning about your clients and customers. They will probe you for stories and find compelling stories from elsewhere.
They won’t look down on you but instead, know that you are an invaluable resource to make sure that the final copy is as powerful as it can be.
Plus there are other benefits from hiring a copywriter that you should consider.
What about money?
There’s one other reason I left out but I suspect is the case for many people.
Money.
Hiring a copywriter will cost you money. It’s a business expense. Though any half-decent copywriter will tell you that it’s an investment…which is true, but it’s also an expense.
Hiring a copywriter will take away resources from your business budget. But you shouldn’t ignore the other side of that equation,
Hiring a copywriter will give you back time that you can use for other business-building activities.
If those business-building activities are as valuable or more valuable for your business, then that’s a win. And if you hire a great copywriter, they should take the necessary steps to do a better job than you could.
So money can be a reason to not hire a copywriter, but it can easily be a reason to hire one.
So…I should or shouldn’t hire a copywriter?
If you don’t have the money in your account, then you should not hire a copywriter and you should do the work. You’ll get the benefits of your experience too.
If you do have the budget to hire someone then you should seriously consider it. You gain their expertise and more time for your business. But, if you want to do the copywriting yourself, then you should feel free to do it yourself.
